Art

…underlines not only our personality and our desires. Art challenges and from time to time needs care.

Depreciation

…is the result of corrosive aging, wrong climatic conditions or damage in transit. Sometimes the visual pleasure is simply impaired by yellowing varnish or clouded by dirt.

Timely

… observation can prevent long term damage and the subsequent loss of value. Therefore the connoisseur amongst the art experts will appraise your collection, also in future..

By no means

…do I advocate a total renovation. My credo as a restorer and  conservator is always: “less is more”. This is true just as much for artworks from the 17th to 19th century, the classic modernist as well as contemporary art with its various technics and materials.

Problems

…often already arise when acquiring works of art, this is why I offer comprehensive support and assistance: advise on buying, surveying your collection under preservation guidelines and also consulting you when hanging your artworks. Sometimes it is simply an inappropriate frame that will impair the impression of a piece.

At every phase

..there are many questions. You may well ask what this will cost you. Simply request, with no commitment on your part, for an expert consultation and I will submit a quote.

Surface cleaning

During the surface cleaning sediments in the final varnish are removed mechanically and/or aqueously. Test yield the answer to what is the gentlest form of conservation, e.g. the supplementation of cleaning agents.

Varnish Removal

If the final varnish has yellowed severely and impairs the appearance of the painting strongly, a chemical procedure (rarely mechanically) can be implemented to strip the surface. Only after a variety of tests show that the process is justifiable from  preservation point of view. If a slightly aged tone is desired then it is possible […]

Rethreading Fissures

For this method of repairing rips individual hemp fibers are glued to the canvas under a microscope (12x magnification). Reweaving is utilized when the rip has a blunt edge, so that it cannot be adhered together, since the short fiber ends do not give enough stability on their own. Finally the individual fibers are retouched […]

Bonding Fissures

Bonding a rip under the microscope (12x magnification) is the highest discipline of art conservation of canvas damages. All the ripped fibers are reweaved and sometimes the fibers are extended or reinforced. The repaired rip is then retouched on the back side to match in ton and gloss the canvas. The entire process is done […]

Fire damage

I am called as an art conservator if through a fire the painting has been exposed to soot and quench water. I oversee the securing of the art after the fire brigade left and initiate immediate preservation measures, packaging and the special conservation process.

Kinetic Art

A speciality niche of my conservation practice is the maintenance and repair of kinetic objects with emphasis of the 1960’s and 1970’s. As assistant to the breathing object artist Guenter Wesseler I additionally restore the mechanics and work directly of the artwork and support the artist in his new creations.
